What Are Jalapeno Peppers?
Jalapeño peppers are a variety of chili pepper (Capsicum annuum). Medium in size with a milder heat than most other chilies, this delicious hot pepper originated in Mexico and is most famous for its role in Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes to this day. These “fat chili peppers,” as they are nicknamed, are most often served when green, but if you allow the peppers from the jalapeño plants to ripen long enough, they will turn red. Green jalapeño peppers taste like a fresh, bright, green bell pepper with a spicy kick. Red jalapeño peppers become a touch sweeter and sometimes hotter.

Jalapeño peppers are certainly hot, but not as hot as spicy chili peppers. This famous hot pepper is anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville Heat Units, or SHU. To give you a comparison, bell peppers rank at 0 SHU, while hot habanero peppers clock in at 350,000 SHU. The jalapeño pepper has a substantial heat level but not enough to take away from its crisp, bright pepper flavor.
