What is Gnocchi?

First, let’s begin with how to pronounce gnocchi: N’YAW-kee. Originating in Northern Italy, gnocchi are pillowy potato pasta in the shape of small dumplings. Gnocchi are made with mostly potato and some semolina flour to hold them together. Known for their irresistible light and airy texture and a subtle savory potato flavor, gnocchi are one of the best comfort foods out there!

What we love about gnocchi is their quick and easy cook time. When cooking gnocchi in boiling water, they float to the top when they are done—in just about 4 minutes. This makes gnocchi a great recipe idea for busy weeknights. This pasta is super versatile and can be enjoyed with simple brown butter, a decadent cream sauce or your favorite jar of tomato sauce. Don’t forget those cheesy baked gnocchi creations!

Because it is pasta made with potato, some may wonder “Is gnocchi gluten free?” Traditionally, gnocchi does contain wheat and so is not gluten free. That said, we offer some incredibly great-tasting gluten-free gnocchi options for those with dietary restrictions: DeLallo Gluten-Free Gnocchi in two sizes!
