Anise pizzelles are best-known for their ornate presence on holiday cookie trays, but they can be enjoyed all year long as a breakfast sweet or an after-dinner treat. They are best served with steaming hot espresso, coffee or tea. Use a pizzelle (broken in half) to garnish ice cream or gelato. Create a unique ice cream sandwich with an Italian twist. Top gelato, yogurt or ice cream with crumbled pizzelle cookies.
What are anise pizzelles?
Anise pizzelles are super thin, crisp, ornate cookies that are buttery and slightly sweet with a spicy, warm licorice flavor due to the addition of anise oil. Traditionally, pizzelles are made with a mixture of oil or butter, eggs, flour, sugar and baking powder—along with the flavorings, which can be lemon, vanilla, anise, etc. The pizzelle dough is pressed in a pizzelle iron (or pizzelle maker) to flatten and create a decorative, waffle-like pattern. Born in a couple small villages within Abruzzo, Italy, pizzelles are said to be one of the oldest cookies! Their eye-catching appearance and irresistible flavor makes them a feature treat on holiday cookie trays.
Pizzelles get their name from the Italian word pizze, which translates to “round and flat.” The suffix of the word, -elle, refers to its small size.
Anise is known as having a black licorice flavor. It is often described as sweet, spicy and aromatic. Anise flavor is achieved through the addition of such ingredients as anise oil or anise extract.
